Description
The war between Germany and the Soviet Union lasted four years and was undoubtedly the deadliest and longest conflict of World War II. From 1939 to 1945, eighty percent of German soldiers were killed or went missing on the Eastern Front. In addition to the vast expanse of land and the natural conditions for which the Germans were unprepared – temperatures reaching minus fifty degrees Celsius, snow, mud – the soldiers of the Third Reich encountered, from the end of 1942, much larger and, thanks to American aid, better-equipped enemy forces. August von Kageneck attempted to depict the history of this conflict through the example of one unit – the 18th Grenadier Regiment, which fought on the Eastern Front from the beginning of the war until its end.
