I dedicate this book not only to the living heroes but also to the fallen members of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps. It is out of deep respect for the enduring traditions they created through their struggles on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. This is not a photocopy of reality. Therefore, it would be unnecessary to verify the authenticity of the individuals and places mentioned. If the names and titles used remind someone of living people and real places, it is a similarity that is partly intentional and partly coincidental, as required by the self-governing laws of novelistic creation.
