Secret landings of the RAF in France 1940-1944. For most of World War II, the RAF sent small aircraft to occupied France, where they landed and took off in complete secrecy. Their mission was to transport agendas to and from France in support of the activities of the French resistance and SOE. The history of these operations is filled with exceptionally adventurous stories that were immensely risky and dangerous for both the pilots and the agents they transported. The operations included secret radio broadcasts; personal messages transmitted on the waves of the BBC; volunteers from the maquis guarding the landing sites; escapes from German night fighters;... The author of the book participated as a pilot in many of these missions, which is why the book is full of his own memories as well as those of his colleagues, including those they dropped off or picked up in France. But not only that. It is also a detailed historical work, as Hugh Verity explored all available sources to present the activities of the involved 161st Special Service Squadron as a whole. The book describes operations that undoubtedly influenced modern French history. The author himself, Hugh Verity, was one of the best 'pick-up' pilots. He retired as a colonel in the RAF.
