The name Bohumil Laušman means little to today's younger generation; out of sight, out of mind, as the old Czech proverb goes. B. Laušman disappeared from the eyes of the Czech public shortly after the power coup in February 1948, when the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia seized control of the state and human destinies for a full forty years. For the preservation of human memory, this is too long a time, and thus he has fallen into oblivion, just like other figures of Czech politics and many of the values of pre-war Czechoslovakia, when he entered the public scene under the banner of the Czechoslovak Social Democracy Party. Jiří Šolc brings his personality and dramatic fate closer to the Czech reader. Utilizing insights from his long-term research of archival sources and literature, he traces the path of the last chairman of the ČSSD before 1948 from his adolescence to his death in the Ruzyň prison cell and attempts to correct the distorted image of his personality, which was shaped by the previous regime and the one-sided perspective of the Czech exile.
