Description
It is rare for us today to gain direct insight into the events of war, especially when it comes to World War I. Therefore, we would like to offer the reader such an insight in the form of an authentic account from the personal story of one of its participants, who recorded it in his diary. The fact that the author of these notes is none other than Elo (Elemír) Šándor, a Slovak writer and journalist, known for his three-volume humorous novel Sváko Ragan from Brezová, makes it all the more significant. In his diary, he describes the combat deployment in the region of Bukovina, which is now part of northern Romania and western Ukraine. Here, the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies fought against each other with varying degrees of success, but with enormous losses on both sides. The introductory chapters describe the situation in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy just before World War I, as well as the causes of its outbreak and the consequences of this war conflict that affected events not only in Europe but also beyond.
