The Masaryks were a modern couple. Both were great idealists, thoughtful and cosmopolitan. They rebelled in the areas of religion, marriage, and child-rearing. Not everything, however, was accepted by the society of their time. TG Masaryk was able to rise above the pettiness of the circumstances and aim higher, which is why he wisely chose a woman who was a constant challenge and inspiration for him. She was also the embodiment of another culture for him, showing him the possibilities of a new social order. Above all, she was his loyal support and helper, who never betrayed him. She was his great love, a white rose, as he called her. It was Charlotta who clearly told him during crucial moments when he wanted to emigrate from Bohemia to abroad: 'You must stay! Your place is here!' What was she like? Charlotta was a woman of many paradoxes. She was a saint and a rebel, a thinker and a too-kind mother. She tried to reconcile the irreconcilable within herself, to manage the demands of two worlds, the conservative and the modern. She was stretched thin by activities for her four children, and with the strength that remained, she helped Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in many of his endeavors, suffering from doubts in comparison to him.
