Description
This Czech-language biographical book follows the life and death of Antonín Pešl (1891–1942), one of the key figures in organizing the Czechoslovak Legions in Italy. Born in Velký Dešov in Moravia, he studied at Charles University in Prague and at the University of Vienna. His views were influenced by the ideas of the first Czechoslovak president, T. G. Masaryk, and he worked with Edvard Beneš. During the First Republic, he was chiefly an editor of the newspaper Národní osvobození. After the Munich Agreement and the March occupation of the remaining Czech lands, he worked underground to restore Czechoslovakia and maintained important contacts with both the civilian and military branches of the democratic resistance. He was one of the initiators of the Central Leadership of the Home Resistance. Arrested in 1940, he was taken through several prisons. His letters to his family and secret messages to political colleagues offer an insightful view into the mind of a man who ultimately stood before a Nazi execution squad.
