Description

This Czech-language third volume in the Theatrum Neolatinum series focuses on Latin biblical plays written in the Czech lands during the 16th and early 17th centuries. The introductory study traces the development of this type of drama from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, compares Bohemian texts with works from other countries, and examines the relationship between early modern plays and ancient, particularly Roman, drama. The second part presents an annotated edition of four previously unpublished modern editions, accompanied by facing-page Czech translations: Toboeus comoedia sacra et nova (1569) by Jan Aquila of Plavec (around 1520–1573/4), Gedeon (1606) and Josephiados comaedia (1607) by Ondřej Rochotius (around 1583–after 1622), and Tobias Junior (1616) by the Jesuit Georg Dingenauer (1571–1631).
