Description
This book explores the fascinating life and work of Joseph Banks, an English entrepreneur, botanist and patron of the natural sciences. His decisiveness, determination, courage and perseverance enabled him to join the elite of the world of his time. He became a successful and influential businessman who used his influence and immense fortune to support scientists, explorers and plant collectors from around the world. Among them were the internationally renowned brothers Bauer, painters and documenters of plants from Valtice in Moravia. Ferdinand Bauer and botanist Robert Brown became the principal figures of an expedition of discovery to Australia. With their contribution, Banks also astonished Europe with exotic plants and animals brought from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. His London home became a centre of both scientific and political life in Britain during the second half of the 18th century.
