The 1688 novel is often described as the first English text to oppose slavery and as a major precursor to the British novel. This Czech-language edition includes an extensive introductory study that places the work in its historical, political and literary context and explores the author’s life, her relationship with royalism and her ambivalent attitude towards slavery and colonialism. The story’s female narrator becomes a woman’s voice in the male world of empire, and this perspective makes the work an inspiring and relevant text to this day.
