This Czech-language book summarises the results of research into the vegetation ecology of the exceptionally species-rich meadows of the White Carpathians and their analogues around the world. It traces the subject from pioneering studies through modern research to the authors’ latest, previously unpublished findings. Rather than offering an encyclopaedic survey of botanical data, the work seeks to answer the provocative question of what makes the White Carpathians exceptional. Readers are introduced to the wider context of the diversity and development of nature in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as to the evolution of scientific views on the relationship between forest and open land in this part of the world. The discussion is framed by the concept of the pericarpatic forest-steppe, a distinctive ecosystem shaped by a unique combination of natural conditions and thousands of years of history, in which the destinies of plants, animals and people intertwine.
