Description
Metacritique of the Critique of Pure Reason is one of the last, largest, and simultaneously least known philosophical works of Herder. It represents not only the sharpest and broadest contemporary reaction to Immanuel Kant's main work, who was initially Herder's teacher, but also one of the most mature self-reflections of Herder's own philosophy and the philosophy of German Enlightenment in general. In his polemic with Kant, he defends some fundamental paradigms of Leibnizian rationalism and their conformity with revealed religion. In contrast, he sees the critical and idealistic philosophy of the late 18th century as its systematic destruction, and against its apriorism, formalism, and transcendentalism, he conceives his own fully-fledged alternative to modern philosophy, based on a qualitative and developmental understanding of the conditions of human thought and being.
