This Czech-language collective monograph, created by an international team of historians of literature, visual art, theatre, film and music, examines how art in interwar Czechoslovakia shaped public discourse. Across forty case studies, the contributors reveal new connections and explore the relationships between art and politics. The first volume focuses on the idea of Czechoslovak statehood, questions of national identity, and the tension between politics and everyday life in the new state as represented in contemporary art. The second volume examines avant-garde artistic gestures responding to the changing world after the First World War, the social situation in the new state and visions for addressing it. It also follows artistic responses to the consequences of the global economic crisis and the threat to European democracy.
