Description
The author's focus is on the meanings of grammatical categories expressed by nouns – namely gender, animacy, number, and case. The author theoretically analyzes and empirically demonstrates how these categories function within the language system and how speakers utilize the system's possibilities. Using real language material, he illustrates how morphological meanings of nouns are shaped by morphological and word-formation means and what position they attain in relation to lexical meanings, i.e., how fragments of a complex semantic structure of a text and communication arise. He understands the means as naturally multifunctional, capturing their values in scales forming a continuum of meanings for each grammatical category.
