Description
The Czechoslovak Church (since 1971 the Czechoslovak Hussite Church) was founded in 1920 in an effort to stimulate a new Czech Reformation, aiming to provide the citizens of the new republic with a modern, nationally conscious religion. It gained nearly a million members and for most of the 20th century was the second largest Czech church. It also underwent a remarkable theological and organizational development, building an undeniable cultural heritage of modernist temples, and was one of the first to open the spiritual office to women. This book is the first academic treatment of the century-long development of this important religious community, not shying away from the darker aspects of its history and not avoiding an analysis of the problems it faces today.
