Description
The birth of an independent Czechoslovak state in the autumn of 1918 was perceived from the outset as one of the most important milestones in national history. This event has therefore been intensely addressed not only by the involved actors but also by journalists and especially historians. The publication analyzes how the complex process of the formation of Czechoslovakia was reflected in Czech and Slovak historiography, with an emphasis on the key period of World War I (1914-1918). Attention is focused not only on the analysis of interpretative schemes and narratives but also on presenting the personal and career profiles of individual historians. In this way, the authors gradually trace the formation of the story of the Czechoslovak revolution during the First Republic, various negativistic or revisionist interpretations, and Marxist-oriented interpretations that dominated domestic historiography after 1948. However, the exile or foreign production is not overlooked, as well as the period from 1990 to 1993, when several historiographical approaches to the issue of the formation of Czechoslovakia were intermingling and coexisting.
