Occasional poetry is a widespread phenomenon in Czech literature of the first half of the 19th century, influencing both literary life and the social life of the emerging national community. In countless congratulatory and mourning texts, rhymed speeches of welcome and farewell, and poems expressing loyalty to politically and socially influential figures, this writing reflected contemporary social customs and stereotypes. Its form, especially its degree of ostentation and originality, arose from the tension between strict genre rules and the personal statement shaped by the author’s relationship with the recipient. The boundary between creative literary work and a mere expression of courtesy or obligatory loyalty was therefore fragile. The first half of the 19th century, particularly its first two decades, was the golden age of occasional poetry. Repetition and increasingly conventional imitation later emptied these texts of content and moved them from literature into the sphere of contemporary etiquette. This book examines the true place of occasional poetry in the period’s verse, as well as its possibilities and limitations. The book is in Czech.
