Description
In this book, the author transcends the boundaries of traditional portrayals of prostitutes as victims or social problems and instead examines the phenomenon of prostitution in the Austrian Empire at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries through the lens of social history reflecting the societal views and attitudes of the time. Based on extensive study of period documents, she shows that women engaged in prostitution of their own volition and viewed it as a trade. She analyzes in detail the relationship between licensed and hidden prostitution, moral police, and other regulatory bodies. She brings closer the environment of commercial sex, including customers, pimps, and brothel operators, which survived in a not-so-changed form even after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire in 1918. Translated by Pavel Pšeja.
