Description
In 921, at the command of the Abbasid caliph, an embassy set out from Baghdad for the kingdom located at the confluence of the Volga and Kama rivers, with Ibn Fadlan among its members. Volga Bulgaria lay far beyond the borders of the Islamic centre, and in his Arabic account Ibn Fadlan left vivid reports of unique historical and ethnographic value about the regions of Eurasia he encountered on the journey. He devoted particular attention to the customs of the local people, including many pagan steppe tribes, especially the Oghuz, Pechenegs and Bashkirs, and above all the Volga Bulgarians. He also met the Rus, Scandinavian warrior-merchants who travelled south from the Baltic along the Russian rivers, and witnessed their funeral ceremony, in which the deceased was burned on a ship. His account of a journey lasting almost a year and covering nearly 5,000 kilometres rightly belongs among the treasures of medieval literature, not only Arabic literature. The contents are in Czech.
