Description
The book analyzes the ways of depicting the alchemical laboratory in three areas of visual art: in genre painting, primarily of the Dutch 17th century, in illustrations accompanying alchemical treatises both manuscript and printed, and in illustrations of specialized technical treatises, particularly those focused on mining and metallurgy. The methodological starting point includes both iconographic art historical analyses and analyses of depicted subjects from the perspective of the history of science and the technologies used at the time. Using these methods, the significance of these depictions is newly assessed, as well as their role in the social and cultural contexts in which they were created and for which they were intended.
