The book deals with the history of the two most significant exile publishing houses of the post-August period: Index, based in Cologne, and Sixty-Eight Publishers, operating in Toronto. The core of the study is a look at their "parallel biography": both publishing houses were similar in many respects, yet they had their conceptual preferences, and their author backgrounds mostly differed, though they had some similarities, leading to competitive relationships that were sometimes surprisingly intense (especially in cases of publishing works by authors living in Czechoslovakia). The author examines the activities of both publishing houses in the context of the literary life of the Czech exile, also briefly noting other publishing houses, cultural magazines, etc. His source base is provided by his many years of research on this topic, as well as the archive of the Index publishing house, stored at the Institute for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the collection of the Toronto publishing house, stored at the Hoover Institution in Stanford, California, and finally, the archive of the Josef Škvorecký Society in Prague.
