Description
The eruption of the Icelandic volcano Laki is one of the largest natural disasters in history. It spewed toxic fog that lasted for eight months and affected Europe for several more years. It caused deaths as far away as the Nile and a famine that some scientists believe may have triggered the French Revolution. The Island in Flames is a story not only about the volcano but also about the people whose lives it changed, such as the priest Jón Steingrímsson, who witnessed these events and recorded them. It is also a story of modern volcanology and the potential of supervolcanoes around the world. And perhaps most importantly, following the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which closed European airspace in 2010, experts are considering how events might unfold if Laki were to erupt again.
