Description
The new translation of Rabelais' Gargantua, this masterpiece of Renaissance humanism and reformism, this flood of refined obscenities, this brutal critique of the contemporary church and university, this dream of a better and freer world, reflects the transformations of Czech, not only in the perception of vulgarisms. It does not aim to provide information about Renaissance laughter but to compel the reader to truly laugh in a 'Gargantuan' way. Moreover, it takes seriously the fact that a significant portion of Rabelaisian jokes is tied to specific locations in Rabelais' native region around Tours, but these jokes are not funny in the Czech context. The entire Gargantua is thus transplanted to South Bohemia – also in honor of the ancient South Bohemian Thelema. Alongside the translation, there is a scholarly commentary explaining the cultural and historical references and contexts of Rabelais' life and work.
