Description
Bennett's work The Old Wives' Tale is considered a classic of English literature – for example, critic John Carey included it in his selection of fifty quality and reader-friendly novels of the 20th century in his book Pure Pleasure. The new Czech translation of The Old Wives' Tale aims for the same ironic ambiguity as the original in its title. Bennett borrowed a slightly pejorative idiomatic expression (in Czech likely 'babská povídačka'), but approached it in a literal sense, hiding beneath it a psychologically intricate story about the lives of two characteristically different sisters and later wives. Between their shared childhood and old age, it follows the fate of one in her native Staffordshire and the other in besieged Paris, while noting seemingly mundane yet magical and traumatic moments of human life that are independent of 'great' history.
