Description
Petr Valenta's book presents a prominent yet forgotten figure of the Prague business world of the 19th century, Richard Dotzauer (1816–1887), a significant supporter of German civic life and politics in Bohemia. Due to the scope of Dotzauer's economic, social, and political activities, the biography serves as a probe into the environment of Prague's middle-class elites and Prague's Germans, thereby complementing the understanding of research areas that are still only partially mapped in historiography. Dotzauer's life path is marked by important processes that transformed Central European society in the 19th century – the rise of capitalism, the creation of modern civil society, and the gradual assertion of modern nationalism. The individual chapters of the book capture the reflection of these processes both in the entrepreneur's career and in his mentality and lifestyle.
