Description

The Silk Road, often incorrectly called the Silk Route in Czech, was an interconnected network of land and sea routes linking the ancient societies of Europe, Central Asia, West Asia, the Middle East and East Asia, and contributing to the development of many great world civilisations. Its total length by land and sea was about 8,000 kilometres, while certain routes extended beyond 35,000 kilometres. It was never simply a road for silk: even during its golden age in the seventh to ninth centuries, under the Tang dynasty, silk made up only one part of the trade with the West, which included everything from precious stones to spices and rhubarb. These trade routes also served as an information superhighway of their time. The book introduces the Silk Road and its predecessors and recalls the controversial modern plan of the government of the People’s Republic of China for a new Silk Road, known as One Belt, One Road. The contents are in Czech.
