Description
Following the first volume’s overview of species diversity, this book explains the causes of the rich plant and animal life in Velká kotlina, resulting from the area’s highly varied habitats, postglacial development and repeated human influence. Based on the author’s own field research, it presents the geology, soils and hydrology of the region, as well as a detailed account of human activity, including sheep and cattle grazing, haymaking, forestry and mining, with recently discovered medieval mines. It also provides the first overview of all recorded snow avalanches from the late nineteenth century to the present. The book contains maps from various periods and numerous photographs of avalanches, soil profiles, streams and waterfalls. Its final section addresses the conservation of this unique site. The contents are in Czech.
