Description
The anthology presents a selection of surrealist dramatic texts from the 1920s to the present day. For the first time, works that are now canonical are brought together in one volume with unknown or previously unpublished texts, featuring authors commonly associated with surrealism (Vítězslav Nezval, Vratislav Effenberger, Jan Švankmajer) alongside plays by creators known more from other artistic fields (Karel Šebek, Ladislav Novák, Jiří Suchý). The entirety of the publication demonstrates that although writing for the theater has never been at the center of interest for Czech surrealists, they devoted consistent attention to it. The anthology includes an extensive study that characterizes the basic constants of surrealist poetics while mapping the historical variability of the relationship between surrealism and drama.
