Description
The volume presents six sets of studies in which Macura gradually refined his conception of modernist and socialist culture. The first four sections contain works on world literature and theory (e.g., Joyce, Tvardovsky, Lotman), studies on Czech Marxism (Fučík, Nejedlý, Štoll), and articles on Macura's poetic and prose contemporaries (e.g., J. Šimon, K. Sýs, D. Hodrová, or J. Frais). The remaining two sections include the dissertation Questions of the Poetics of Czech Socialist Literature (1986), in which Macura summarized his linguoliterary studies, as well as the titular collection of semiotic essays Happy Age (1992). Thus, Macura's works on the culture in which he grew up and which he critically reflected upon are presented in a comprehensive form.
