Pinkasim, or the books that guided the self-governing bodies of early modern Jewish communities, are a primary source for understanding the functioning of municipal self-governance in areas of worship, education, judiciary, economy, and regulation of communal coexistence, livelihoods, and commercial competition. The complicated relationships of the communities with the authorities, from whose will they existed, can best be understood from external archival materials. This collective work by several Czech historians and Judaists works with both types of sources. The accompanying studies summarize the basic premises and principles of Jewish self-governance enshrined in Jewish law (Pavel Sládek), analyze the municipal statutes of selected Czech communities in terms of organization, functions, and agenda of self-governance (Kajetán Holeček), examine normative authoritative sources that establish the general legal framework and specific conditions in which the communities existed (Hana Legnerová), and reflect on the approaches, possibilities, and authority of Jewish self-governments through the case of leisure activities of community residents and attempts at their regulation (Tobiáš Smolík).
