Description
Spanish Testament describes the author's experiences during the Spanish Civil War and subsequent imprisonment. Koestler made three trips to Spain during the civil war, working for the Comintern and as an agent for the official press agency of the loyalist government, using the accreditation of the British newspaper News Chronicle as cover. During his second stay in nationalist territory, he narrowly escaped arrest by Franco's army when he was recognized in nationalist-controlled Seville by a former colleague from the Berlin publishing house Ullstein. For the third time, he made the reckless decision to stay in Málaga in southern Spain after the republican troops withdrew. He was captured, sentenced to death, and imprisoned in Seville. The description of experiences and psychological insights from prison forms the second part of the book – Dialogue with Death.
