Description
The publication fills a noticeable gap in the scholarly literature on the adoption of stimuli from ancient Greece and Rome in modern Czech art. It covers a range of disciplines from sculpture to photography, and also touches on applied arts and architecture. In fifteen chapters, it discusses both the general and detailed "direct" inspirations from ancient works, particularly sculpture, and refers to their mediation through subsequent classicisms. However, it primarily emphasizes the ways in which elements of ancient mythology are represented, characteristic of the alternating conditions of the modern art scene. The publication offers a new approach to the topic: it notes, among other things, what has been distinctive or relatively unique about artistic responses to antiquity in the Czech context. It is equipped with a rich visual appendix.
