Description
German liberals paved the way for the Nazis to power – this can be summarized as the thesis defended by American historian Eric Kurlander in his widely discussed book 'The Price of Exclusion'. German liberal parties gradually accepted the racist Weltanschauung, sidelining the competing concept of a liberal-universalist Rechtsstaat over the years, and ultimately discarded it altogether. Kurlander also notes exceptions, some of which are particularly remarkable and valuable for understanding the overall context, yet his conclusion remains clear and relentless: the main liberal current was dominated by an obsession with a racist community, blood, land, and many other categories that later characterized Hitler's national socialism.
