The monograph offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the portraits of scholars, doctors, priests, poets, and other intellectual professions of the early modern period. The preserved likenesses in old prints and manuscripts have been examined from the perspective of art history and the history of clothing, with attention also paid to accompanying texts. The publication includes a comprehensive catalog of more than a hundred portraits, many of which are published for the first time. The authors note the self-presentation of intellectuals, whether it manifests through engaging a quality artist, wearing elegant clothing, or in laudatory poems about the personality or work depicted.
