J. W. Goethe, generally known mainly as the author of Faust, was not only a dramatist but also a poet, novelist, natural scientist, and politician – an advisor to the contemporary nobility. His autobiography thus far exceeds the boundaries of a biographical text. At its core is a unique interaction between the private individual J. W. Goethe and the environment, situations, and times. The reporting on this mutual influence is very detailed – hence the text is so extensive. Its appeal lies mainly in the dramatic nature of everything that happens beneath the surface of seemingly neutral reporting. It is generally believed that a similar "autobiography" does not actually exist in world literature. It is unique from any perspective.
