Description

The contentious theme associated with the names S. Bandera and R. Shukhevych, as well as the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, stirs passions far beyond the borders of the post-Soviet space. The events in Ukraine in 2014 revealed the susceptibility of this issue to exploitation, whether by the architects of revived Russian aggression, Polish nationalists, or Ukrainian political technologists of the post-Soviet era. The book is the first attempt in the Czech academic environment to provide an objective picture of the birth and formative stages of a movement whose historical role divides not only historians but also entire nations and their political representations. The publication deals with Polish-Ukrainian national rivalry against the backdrop of interwar European history, but its scope also reaches back to the 19th century, whose spirit was severed by the First World War, and it does not shy away from the dramatic events in Czechoslovak Subcarpathian Ruthenia during the pre-Munich period.
