Description
Jana Palach and Oskar Brüsewitz, who is little known outside Germany, share a similar fate. This is not only because Brüsewitz, a pastor active in Zeitz in the German Democratic Republic, set himself on fire in protest against the communist regime in August 1976, but also because, like Palach, he became a political martyr. The author shows in the book that the conceptualization of Palach and Brüsewitz oscillates in a symbolic dimension between "victim" and "hero," depending on the roles they are meant to fulfill as discursive figures from the perspective of various (Western and Eastern) actors.
