The sixth volume of selected works by Vladimír Macura presents the author's prose texts that stem from authentic – and often explicitly autobiographical – experiences with contemporary normalized Czech reality, which they not only document but also uncover and demask. The novel Citizen Monte Christo (1993) and the short story collections Tender Claws (1983) and Playing at Something (1995) focus on heroes who strive with all their might to control their own lives through various social and communication games, yet this effort often leads them into bizarre and grotesque situations, hinting at the absurdity of the world in which they are destined to live and be.
