Description
The fifth volume of Jakub Deml’s collected works develops the “footprints” line, a hybrid genre combining diaries, documents, original fiction, Deml’s own translations and literary contributions by other authors. It contains Šlépěje IV to VIII, published between 1919 and 1921. These volumes explore the relationship with the new Czechoslovak state, while each has its own character: Deml settles accounts with pro-Austrian clerical circles and presents extensive personal documents, including the cycle Aby se do toho vidělo. Šlépěje VII and VIII document his attempt to settle permanently in Slovakia, where initial enthusiasm soon gives way to disillusionment and the experience also awakens his darkest side, pathological antisemitism. Šlépěje V is a collection of poetry linked in part to První světla, published more than a decade earlier. The Czech-language volume includes an afterword, an editorial note, translations of all foreign-language passages, explanatory notes, a name index, and reproductions of illustrations and covers from the original editions.
