Description
Heimito von Doderer (1896–1966), one of the classics of modern Austrian literature, became widely known only at a relatively advanced age with his novel Strudlhofské schody, which was first published in 1951. This was followed by other books of the so-called Vienna Trilogy, Démoni and Osvětlená okna, interconnected by some characters, but primarily by the author's beloved Vienna during the dramatic changes in the Austrian state and society in the first thirty years of the 20th century. By combining a deliberately trivial plot at times, analytical social reflections, and impressionistic descriptions presented in a 'baroque' form of complexly branched sentences, this opinionatedly conservative artist created a distinctive and surprisingly modern style for his work, which can be perceived in its scope as a counterpart to Musil's unfinished The Man Without Qualities, but differs from it in that it is complete and concluded.
