Description

The author reflects on his childhood, which was disrupted by the First World War and the Bolshevik Revolution in the USSR. At the age of eleven, he emigrated to Estonia with his parents, and the arduous journey was marked by the death of the author's brother and sister. Only in Tallinn did the situation improve. Young Andrejev had the opportunity to study and completed his studies in Prague in 1927, which became his next home. He experienced the Nazi occupation here, but after the end of the Second World War, he was arrested by the Soviet counterintelligence SMERSH, which was searching for Russian emigrants. Andrejev was imprisoned first in Czech territory and later in Germany. In 1948, he was released and accepted an offer to lecture at the University of Cambridge. He corresponded with many prominent Russian emigrants and was interested in events in the USSR. Due to an eye disease, he recorded part of his memories on a tape, and his daughter, an educator at Oxford University, contributed to their publication.
