Description
Tomáš Hříbek's book is the first monograph in the Czech language that offers a philosophical defense of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. The author explains the sources of the current discussion, defines basic concepts, and analyzes arguments for and against assisted suicide and euthanasia. Among other things, he addresses these fundamental questions: What is death, and how do we know it has occurred? Is death always a harm, or can it also be beneficial? Can the decision to end one's life be rational and moral? Is the appeal to the moral autonomy of the patient convincing? Does suffering at the end of life have meaning? If the non-initiation or cessation of treatment or palliative care is ethically acceptable, why not euthanasia and assisted death? Can euthanasia for patients who cannot express consent be justified? Is it possible to reject euthanasia and assisted suicide based on medical ethics or the conscience of doctors? Will we find ourselves on a slippery slope with the legalization of euthanasia, leading to immoral practices? And are similar methods of assisted death morally acceptable only on the condition that they remain exceptional?
