Description

The book analyzes key issues of the activities of liberal democrats in Germany from 1933 to the end of the Nazi regime. Based on careful study of sources, the author examines the motivations, hopes, and fears of German liberal democrats, who were the best example of middle-class progressivism in the Weimar Republic, and discovers why so few resisted and so many welcomed a range of programmatic elements of the Third Reich. It shows that German liberalism was not only an opponent and victim of National Socialism but, in some respects, its ideological predecessor. The fact that liberalism could be both has fundamental implications for understanding the genesis of authoritarian regimes anywhere in the world. The long-standing reluctance of Weimar democrats to confront the regime demonstrates how easily liberal democracy can succumb to fascism.
