In 2017, 110 years have passed since the birth and simultaneously 40 years since the death of Jan Patočka, the most significant Czech philosopher of the 20th century. Such a jubilee occasion became a challenge not only for the expected and rather formally celebratory speeches but also for a public philosophical reflection on the significance and overall meaning of the philosophical work of Professor Jan Patočka. On March 28, 2017, a colloquium titled 'Patočka's Thinking and Today's World' took place at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences as a result of the collaboration between the Department for the Study of Modern Czech Philosophy and the Jan Patočka Archive at the Center for Theoretical Studies. It was attended by Czech researchers, some of whom personally experienced Jan Patočka and his work as his university students and later participants in his apartment seminars and lectures from 1973 to 1976, when the renewed totalitarian communist dictatorship made it impossible for Professor Patočka to continue his teaching activities at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University.
