Description
The book maps the specific year 1937 in Czechoslovak history. It consists of 37 personal stories from the year 1937, ranging from President T. G. Masaryk to writer Karel Čapek, footballer Josef Bican, actress Lída Baarová, and the family of the newly born Madeleine Albright. It also includes Konrad Henlein, Vojtech Tuka, and Max Brod. In addition, the entire year is framed month by month by twelve global events, such as the Spanish Civil War, the Moscow Trials, the tragedy of the Hindenburg airship, the success of Soviet aviators at the North Pole, and the Nanking Massacre of the Second Sino-Japanese War. All of this creates a mosaic of the specific year 1937, which symbolically marked a step into the abyss of the tragic year that followed.
