Description

There is a general consensus that the main contributor to the ongoing increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere is the continued use of fossil fuels in energy, industry, and transportation. However, much less is known about the fact that another significant global source of greenhouse gases is agriculture and land use, specifically the cultivation of crops and trees and the raising of livestock. It is precisely carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, three greenhouse gases, whose anthropogenic emissions are closely related to land use and agriculture. The aim of the book Greenhouse Gases from Soil and Agriculture is to fill this information gap and provide organized current information about the properties, formation, and consumption of significant greenhouse gases in the soil and their emissions from terrestrial ecosystems. For the first time, a professional manual is being published in Czech that seeks to map all the main aspects of this complex issue – it elucidates the biological processes of greenhouse gas formation and consumption, provides insights into the global context of their emissions, illustrates the magnitude of emissions from various systems through several examples, and presents specific options for reducing emissions from soils and ecosystems. This highly needed publication can also be understood as an introduction...
