Description
The ambitious young man Arvid Stjärnblom falls in love with Lydia, the daughter of the landscape painter Stille. However, he does not want to commit and is not the only suitor for Lydia. After years, when both are already bound by conventional marriages, he attempts to rekindle his former love and free himself from societal constraints. But while Lydia leaves her family, Arvid struggles to find the strength for such an act. Over time, he also realizes that Lydia's need for love is greater than he had imagined, and the same applies to her erotic desire. The novel is infused with lyricism, but also biting irony and a view of life stripped of all illusions, questioning the possibility of achieving true love. In Sweden, it is among the most popular classic prose works and has been adapted into film three times (1945, 1977, and 2016).
