Description
The starting point of existing descriptions of Czech syntax is predominantly written texts; the syntax of spoken discourse (especially those that are unprepared and semi-prepared) has been studied only exceptionally. The members of the authorial team are convinced that certain general characteristics of commonly spoken Czech can be described, which do not represent any 'irregularities' or 'deviations', against the backdrop of the texts themselves. They focus on describing the syntactic and textual construction of spoken discourse with regard to the absence of sharply defined units; they analyze utterance units as an integral part of dialogical replies and consistently consider their function in projection and interaction mechanisms. They pay great attention to the extensive and differentiated category of 'discourse markers'. All of this is connected with a systematic interpretation of the sound aspect, mainly prosodic means. The data for the research were drawn primarily from corpora of spoken Czech, but also from other supplementary sources.
