Description
The five-hundred-year history of today's small town in the Ore Mountains was rich – at the time of its founding in the 16th century, Jáchymov became world-famous due to the discoveries of noble silver minerals and the technical progress in mining and natural sciences, which attracted scholars from all over Europe. In the 19th century, a unique production of uranium paints developed, and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the local pitchblende gained fame with the discovery of two new radioactive elements – polonium and radium. In the mid-20th century, Jáchymov entered history sadly, with the enslavement of thousands of people exploited by the communist regime for uranium mining. Throughout the mining period from the early modern age to the present, unique mineral samples have been found by miners, mining officials, and scientists, which continue to amaze with their quality and diversity of represented species. Over time, Jáchymov became a mineralogical locality of global significance. This book is divided into three main parts: the history of Jáchymov's silver bonanzas, an outline of geology, and an overview of the most significant primary and secondary minerals. The publication is the result of many years of research by the authors in archives and in the underground of the Jáchymov ore district. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of minerals…
