Description

This Czech-language book presents Slovak society in the context of its European historical development and influences. It gives readers whose knowledge of the Slovak Republic has often been based only on occasional media articles, reports and commentaries an opportunity to understand more deeply the causes of events, phenomena, political conflicts and decisions in Slovakia that have attracted or surprised them. The authors aim to provide sufficient information about Slovakia and its development in a broader historical context, enabling readers to consider the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of life in contemporary Slovak society. Today, the Slovak Republic is a democratic state and a respected member of the European Union. The book therefore outlines Slovakia’s complex journey towards independent democratic statehood in the twentieth century, focusing especially on the main trends in social development after 1 January 1993, up to the period preceding its first historic presidency of the Council of the EU.
